About TDiR Readathon

About the Readathon (2020):

In 2013, beloved fantasy author, Susan Cooper, was given the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award. Coincidentally, 2013 was also the 40th anniversary of The Dark is Rising, probably her best known book. Having been a fan of The Dark is Rising Sequence for a long time, I was thrilled at hearing her getting recognized in the SFF community and decided to host a readathon of the 5-book series starting December 7, 2013.

The response was fantastic as the Readathon brought together over 140 fans in 13 different countries and was acknowledged and promoted by Susan Cooper.

To celebrate Susan’s 80th birthday and the 40th anniversary of the Newbery Medal-winning fourth book of the Sequence, The Grey King, the 2nd Worldwide The Dark is Rising Readathon started on December 1, 2015.

In 2017, we joined with authors Rob McFarlane and Jackie Morris and their #TheDarkIsReading Twitter book club. And we've hosted the Readathon every year since. We now have over 1100 followers on social media that make up one of the best online communities around!

Please consider joining readers all over the world on this fascinating journey maybe for the first time or maybe relive the magic and the myth.

About The Dark is Rising Sequence:

The Dark is Rising Sequence is considered one of the classics in the canon of fantasy fiction. This YA adventure features a memorable cast as "Old Ones", Will Stanton and Merriman Lyon with the help of the Drew children and others wage an epic battle of wits and magic with the Rider and his Dark hosts in a classic quest to find the magical items that will help the Light vanquish the Dark. The story takes us through time and space with Welsh and Arthurian mythos weaved throughout and has delighted young and old readers for decades.

The Sequence's order is as follows:

Over Sea, Under Stone
The Dark is Rising
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree

Here is the prophecy that greets readers, to perhaps further pique your interest:

When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back;
Three from the circle, three from the track;
Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
Five will return, and one go alone.

Iron for the birthday, bronze carried long;
Wood from the burning, stone out of song;
Fire in the candle-ring, water from the thaw;
Six Signs the circle, and the grail gone before.

Fire on the mountain shall find the harp of gold
Played to wake the Sleepers, oldest of the old;
Power from the green witch, lost beneath the sea;
All shall find the light at last, silver on the tree.
